Pongal was celebrated on 7 Jan 2026 at Sevalaya Nilgiris’ Mahatma Gandhi Hospital at Gudalur. Sridharan Mahadevan, a donor from the USA, graced the occasion as Chief Guest, along with his wife. During the event, the Chief Guest also inaugurated the new lab building at the hospital, constructed with his support at a cost of ₹43.5 lakhs.
Equipped with modern medical equipment, the laboratory will significantly strengthen diagnostic services at the hospital and benefit thousands of patients from Gudalur and surrounding tribal villages who visit the hospital every month.
The Pongal celebrations featured the traditional preparation of Pongal. The Chief Guest interacted with hospital staff, Community College students and members of the tribal community, who were dressed in traditional attire and participated with great enthusiasm.
Speaking on the occasion, Sridharan Mahadevan highlighted the importance of accessible healthcare in remote and tribal regions and appreciated Sevalaya’s sustained efforts in delivering free and quality services to underserved communities. He also expressed willingness to support Sevalaya’s future initiatives.
Earlier V Muralidharan, Founder and Managing Trustee, Sevalaya welcomed the gathering and spoke about the organisation’s history and its commitment to serving the underprivileged and tribal communities through healthcare, education and community development initiatives. He also briefly outlined the organisation’s future plans, such as strengthening medical infrastructure
and expanding skill-building opportunities for local youth.
Aakash S M, Head – Health, Sevalaya delivered the Vote of Thanks expressing gratitude to the Chief Guest, staff members, students and community members for making the event meaningful. A memento was presented to the Chief Guest.
